CAD$750 for Mt. Merapi Victims

As one of the efforts to collect funds for victims of Mt. Merapi volcano that just happened recently in Indonesia, 2 Indonesian community organizations in Ottawa, Indonesian Canadian Congress (ICC) and Friends of Indonesia (FOI), joined together to create a new year event in Kanata South Business Park on December 31, 2010. From the event, we managed to collect net donation of CAD$750 to be forwarded to the victims via a registered charity organization in Canada. Also present in the event are the Ambassador of Indonesia for Canada, Ms. Dienne H. Moehario.

Toll from volatile Merapi rises to 240

The death toll in a series of eruptions from an Indonesian volcano has hit 240.

The figure has continued to rise since a massive blast on Nov. 5 – the largest in a century – as rescuers have pulled more bodies from smoldering villages, people have died from their wounds and officials have counted deaths indirectly caused by the volcano.

Blast from Indonesia volcano raises deaths to 122

Searing gas avalanched down an Indonesian volcano with a thunderous roar, torching houses and trees and incinerating villagers as they fled Mount Merapi’s worst eruption in a century. Dozens of bodies found Friday raised the death toll to 122.

The injured – with clothes, blankets and even mattresses fused to their skin by the 1,400 degree Fahrenheit (750 degree Celsius) heat – were carried away on stretchers following the first big explosion just before midnight.
